Popularly known as Gautama Buddha, Prince Siddhartha Gautama was born on this auspicious day. Lord Buddha was the founder of the Buddha religion. Buddha Purnima falls on the night of a full moon between April and May. The festival is celebrated all over India and other Asian countries following Buddhism. On this day in India, devotees wear all white clothes and offer prayers in front of the statue of Lord Buddha. People pour water at the foot of the Bodhi Tree (sacred tree), give donations, and practice meditation. Devotees also visit Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. Bodhi Temple is the location where the Lord Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment.
